How to Read Your Eyeglass Prescription

When you look at your prescription for eyeglasses, you will see numbers listed under the headings of OS and OD. They are Latin abbreviations; OS (oculus sinister) means the left eye and OD (oculus dextrus) means the right eye. Occasionally you will see a notation for OU, which means something involving both eyes. In general, the further away from zero the number on your prescription, the worse your eyesight and the more vision correction you need. A plus sign in front of the number means you are farsighted and a minus sign means you are nearsighted. These numbers represent diopters, the unit used to measure the correction, or focusing power, of the lens your eye requires. Diopter is often abbreviated "D."

For example, if your prescription says -1.00, you have one diopter of nearsightedness. This is a fairly mild amount of nearsightedness. If you are -4.25, that means you have 4 and 1/4 diopters of nearsightedness. This is more nearsighted than -1.00, and requires stronger (thicker) lenses. Similarly, +1.00 would be a small amount of farsightedness and +5 would be more.

For people who have astigmatism, there will be three numbers in your prescription. The general form for writing these numbers is S x C x Axis

The S refers to the "spherical" portion of the prescription, which is the degree of nearsightedness or farsightedness discussed above.

The C refers to the "cylinder" or astigmatism, and can be a negative or a positive number. It measures in diopters the degree of astigmatism that you have. The bigger this number, the more astigmatism you have.

The Axis is a number anywhere between 0 and 180 degrees. It reveals the orientation of the astigmatism It is not enough to specify how much astigmatism there is; you have to know where the difference in curvature is taking place.

Here are two examples of what prescriptions for eyes with astigmatism could look like:

-2.00 +1.50 x 180

+3.50 +3.00 x 45

The first prescription means that the person has 2 diopters of nearsightedness with 1.5 diopters of astigmatism. and an axis of 180 degrees.

The second prescription means that the person has 3.5 diopters of farsightedness, 3 diopters of astigmatism and an axis of 45 degrees.

Eyeglass Men's Frames

Today's styles show rectangles to be very fashionable for men. These shapes can be explored through many materials. The current technology can offer extremely light- weight and thin designs. The plastic frames offer a bolder look. Rimless styles are extremely popular. Titanium has broadened the choices in eyewear over the years. Its flexible strength has always appealed to men. Many of the rimless designs are made of titanium and are therefore much stronger than their predecessors. As with all fashion today, anything goes.
Most men enjoy contemporary styling in their eyewear but the classics still hold up. Aviator styles are still worn as sunglasses. Double bridge styles can still work on some men. Tortoise shell coloring works well on many men who desire a look with a statement. Work with a stylist or optician who can help you make an appropriate selection for your face shape and prescription.

Women's Eyeglass Frames

Eyeglass frames can truly enhance one’s appearance. Upswept shapes can literally add lift to a face. Color can be used to add attention. The smaller frames are still most popular. When choosing a frame remember it is to accent you, not take over. Today’s materials allow for beautiful color. There is anodized titanium which is thin, light- weight and delicately beautiful. Many of the rimless designs are made out of these materials. The small bits of metal join unframed lenses creating an almost not there look, which is extremely popular today. The rimless style or three-piece mount as it is called also allows you to shine through. These frameless styles offer every shape imaginable.
If your face is round you want a rectangular frame to counter balance the roundness. If you have an oval face any shape from the butterfly, upsweep, oval, round or rectangle are appropriate. Square faces do better with softer shapes. If your chin is very pointy an eyeglass frame can balance that out. Plastic frames are popular for women today. Plastics offer everything from a bright red little cat eye to a heavy tortoise shell rectangle. Many of the frame designers use laminates that allow layering of color for an extremely bold and rich look. Eyewear needs to be considered within the context in which one wears it. There are dressy delicate metal frames. Some designers even add small jewels to the frame. Eyewear follows the trends in fashion. Today you can wear what looks best on you whether it be almost invisible, heavy plastic, small, large and jeweled with upswept temples. Just remember; if it isn’t appropriate to your prescription choose something else. With the myriad of styles available today you with the help of your optician will fine the right frame for your prescription and face shape.

Types of visions

Last night i got an email,

I want "computer glasses" slighty altered from reading prescription for distance to computer display (18-30 in.) vs normal reading (12-18 in.) can my optometrist make such a prescription?

Types of visions :

There are three types of vision

1st distance.

2nd reading.

3rd mid vision.

Distance vision:

Distance glasses unlike reading glasses tend to spend a lot more time on your face. That makes sense since regardless of how strong or weak your prescription is you still need to have them on most of the time. So that means you want to make sure you get a pair that are comfortable and lightweight. Having glasses on your face for that long should seem effortless. The weight of your glasses is very important and luckily today's glasses are so technologically advance you can find a lightweight pair of glasses no matter what your prescription is.

Reading vision:

Today there is a wide range of reading glasses to choose from. Some are even foldable to fit in small, handy, attractive cases. The frames available are interesting and flattering. You can get these in stainless steal, gold or silver rimmed or even in trendy plastic, in a variety of shapes and colors. If you are looking for something exclusive, choose handmade frames. Accessories like magnifiers to read really small print, or even in dim light are also available.

Mid vision:

Mid vision is use for computer glasses. If you want only single vision glasses for computer purpose only then send your complete prescription, I will let you know your mid vision prescription via reply.

Eyeglasses for computer use

It has been discovered, sitting in front of a computer screen not only makes you a pain in the neck and causes a creak in your backside, but it gives you eye problems as well.Even if you are currently wearing eyeglasses, you may want to purchase yourself a pair of computer glasses.

Computer glasses are specially made. In regular prescription glasses, including bifocals, you usually find help in seeing better at near ranges or far ranges.

If you spend long hours in front of a computer, you may want to get computer glasses, whether or not you have to wear corrective lenses. Computer Vision Syndrome can cause a multitude of symptoms, leading to loss of productivity. CVS can cause headaches, blurred vision, neck and shoulder pain, loss of focus, tired, burning eyes, and double vision. If you do not wear a eyeglasses, then you may want to get computer glasses anyway, as they also help with the glare from fluorescent lights.

The simplest pair of computer glasses you can order would be the single vision lenses. Their modified power helps keep the general user from some of the discomforts associated with CVS. For people with presbyopia, the occupation progressive lens, would probably work best. The transitions zone is much larger than your typical progressive lens and can even do some distant vision for you. They have improved computer vision near and far as well as the middle zone.

For some people it may be beneficial, even if not strictly necessary, for them to get an occupational bifocal. If you need reading glasses, this could be a good option. A portion of the lens is dedicated to close up work and the other portion to mid-distance work for working on the computer.

What is Prescription? and How To Read An Eyeglass Prescription?

When ordering prescription eyeglasses on
line, be sure your eye doctor writes your pupil distance (PD) measurement on your prescription. T
his ensures the optical center of your lenses will be exactly in front of your p
upils.

sample of a prescription:

How To Read An Eyeglass Prescription:

When you have your eye exam and the doctor gives you a copy of your eyeglass prescription, do you know how to read it? What does OD, OS, and OU mean?

An eyeglass prescription is written in a standardized format with standardized notation so it can be interpreted worldwide. Let’s look at one and break it down:

-2.00 -1.00 x 180. The first number (-2.00) tells us the spherical refractive error (farsightedness or nearsightedness). In this case, because there is a minus sign in front of the 2.00, this patient is nearsighted. A plus sign would indicate farsightedness.

The second number (-1.00) is the astigmatism. If there is no astigmatism, we generally write the letters DS or SPH after the first number to let the optician know that we didn’t just forget to write in the astigmatism.

The final number (180) is the direction (AXIS) of the astigmatism. Astigmatism, a football-shaped eye, can be measured in any direction around the clock. We use the numbers from 90 to 180 to indicate the orientation of the football shape.

There may be additional numbers in a glasses prescription. For instance, if the basic prescription is followed by a small number with a superscript (1^) it indicates prism correction. There may be more than one set of prism numbers for each eye.

Lastly, there can also be numbers denoting the amount of near reading strength needed (bifocal or progressive). They usually go from +0.75 to +3.00, depending on age and visual need.

The letters OD and OS in front of a prescription let us know which eye each string of numbers is for. OD (Oculus Dexter) stands for right eye and OS (Oculus Sinister) for left eye, while OU (Oculus Uterque, Oculus Unitas or Oculus Uniter) means both eyes.

  • Sphere: This number measurement reflects the extent of the nearsightedness or farsightedness.
  • Cylinder: This number measurement refers to the amount of astigmatism (an irregularly shaped cornea which causes blurring) in the eye.
  • Axis:This number measurement describes the astigmatism in degrees from the horizontal (most left and right eyes have the same axis in astigmatism) axis.

    Sunglasses buying tips

Regardless of style, sun glasses should protect your vision. Recent scientific advancements have greatly expanded understanding of the eye, creating materials to defend them.

The bright light of a cloudless day can be painful and distracting, so most people wear sunglasses when outside, especially while driving. At the other end of the spectrum, fog and smoke decrease visibility. The amber-colored lenses of recent decades filter out the additional blue light scattered by low-lying clouds, giving drivers a more balanced, clearer view of the road. Polarized sunglasses help cut down the glare of reflected light.

Ultra-violet radiation (known as UVA and UVB) has been shown to be a contributing factor for cataracts and many other eye problems. Look for UV-rated sunglasses, which block at least 70-percent of UVA and 60-percent of UVB light. Some sun glasses claim to block 100-percent of both.

The other main danger is impact damage. Flying debris ranges from annoying (specks of dust) to sight-threatening (pebbles kicked up by passing cars). The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is a private organization dedicated to producing quality goods in the USA. For sunglasses, ANSI requirements include dropping a 1-inch steel ball on the lens from four feet high and shooting a quarter-inch ball at 150 feet per second. If no part of the lens touches the eye when impacted, the glasses pass the test and may advertise themselves as ANSI compliant. This is especially useful in sport eyewear.

Sunglasses are one item where the highest price doesn't always mean the best product. Some designer glasses may not include the safety features that your eyes deserve. Of course, at Overstock.com, discount sunglasses and designer sunglasses can be synonymous.

By the way, when buying sunglasses online, you may find that so-called discount sunglasses, allegedly from top designers, are, in fact, cheap knock-offs instead of the real deal. If so, the chances of a refund are pretty slim, so buy from a reputable dealer like Overstsock.com, one with a long history of selling authentic, quality products.

    Types Of Prescription Lenses

    • Single vision lenses :
Your eyes might require vision improvement only for distance, only for reading purpose, or even for both. If you require correction only for distance vision, then you probably only want single vision lenses. With single vision lenses, you could look through all areas of the lens and it is visible clearly. If you desire vision improvement only for reading and in case you do not have astigmatism, then you could even purchase non-prescription reading glasses. If you do have astigmatism, you should go for prescription reading glasses. In either case, these are only considered single vision lenses.
    • Progressive lenses :
Progressive lenses are sometimes as well recognizedas no-line bifocals, which are in fact trifocal lenses without the visible lines. Progressive lenses were urbanized as many people required the convenience of not having to change their prescription glasses for reading purpose, but they did not like other people to see the visible line. Progressive lenses do have an additional benefit however, which is that you sense a soft transition when you move your eyes from far away objects to close up objects. With a lined bifocal, the transition among viewing areas could even be somewhat uncomfortable.

    • Multifocal lenses :

If you require vision adjustment for both distance and for reading purpose, then you could use two pairs of glasses, and swap depending on what you require to see. Or, you could even choose multifocal lenses (bifocal lenses, trifocal lenses, or progressive lenses). Many people find it not convenient to swap every now and then to another pair in order to read something.

Multifocal lenses divide the lens, so that part of the lens is kept for reading and another part of the lens is kept for distance vision. Bifocal (two areas) and trifocal (three areas) lenses have visible lines, which separate the diverse areas of the lens.

    • Prescription reading glasses :

Non-prescription reading glasses just enlarge objects that are close to us, like the letters in a book. Your eye doctor could only decide the magnification power, which is most excellent for you, or you could figure it out by yourself through test and error. A doctor’s prescription is not sometime necessary in order to choose a reading lens. Drugstore reading glasses are just eyeglasses frames with enlarging lenses pre-loaded in a range of powers with stock lens powers. It is typically less costly to buy reading eyeglasses this way, but stock lens powers hardly ever offer an optimal vision correction. For best results, reading lenses with magnification customized to your requirements could be installed in any pair of eyeglasses frames.

What Are the Most Comfortable Eyeglasses on the Market?

Comfort is an individual thing, for instance, some people wear contacts because they don't enjoy having to worry about glasses. On the other hand, the idea of putting something in their eyes makes some people squeamish and they can't fathom wearing anything but eyeglasses.

Yet, even those who make that choice to wear specs agree that glasses can be a bit cumbersome at times. The shape at the bridge is the most importan
    t a
spect of determining comfort and is where the source of aggravation often stems. These types of glasses often leave r
    ed marks on the no
se because they grip too tightly. This can make them very hard to wear.

    More often t
han not, such frames are made out of plastic, this doesn't mean that plastic will always be uncomfortable, in fact, some designer names are stamped on plastic frames.

Which leaves the question of what types of eyeglasses offer the most comfort to those who chose glasses over contacts?

    Plastic eyeglasses:
Plastic eyeglasses are economical, stylish and above all, they can be
comfortable when made correctly. How comfortable? Well, this can largely depend on the make, model and style of the frames. For example, cat ey
e frame glasses are said to be easy to wear, whereas larger, boxier frames are heavier and harder to keep from sliding. Constantly having to push glasses up can be awkward and far from comfo
rtable. Plastic isn't the only material that glasses are made out of though. It is these other materials that often offer greater comfort than plastic can.

    Metal:
Believe it or not, metal frames tend to be lighter on the face than plastic eyeglasses,
    making them far m
ore comfortable. This is because the frames are thinner and have less bulk. They can also form into more
pleasing and fashionable shapes making them a preferred choice among eye glass wearers.

    Titanium:
Titanium eyes glasses can run a bit on the expensive side if you get true titanium glasses that are well made and not imitation. The expense is not without cause! Titanium eye glasses are generally light weight, corrosion resistant and can take being sat on! They can also give a snug fit on the nose, keeping them from slipping. This feature is one of many aspects that enhance comfort for the wearer. They are also extremely sturdy and come in a large variety of shapes and colors.

    'Memory-Metal' Flexon:
A revolutionary product, memory metal Flexon glasses are feather light and can be bent a variety of angles. This makes them super durable. It also makes them super comfortable! Because the metal bends and expands it can shape around the bridge of the nose. Over time, the glasses will "remember" the exact shape of your bridge, so that they sit there undisturbed until you take them off. No more pushing your glasses back into place 101 times a day! Out of all the above glasses, true Flexon memory metal frames are the highest, with frames starting in at around $80.00 and springing upwards towards the higher end hundreds.

How to measuring your PD(Pupil Distance)?

This should be done with glasses off, if the numbers on a ruler are difficult to see, then a magnifying mirror may help.

    1. Whilst looking into a mirror hold a ruler against the bridge of the nose with one hand.

    2. Close your left eye, and line the '0' up with the centre of the pupil of your right eye as shown in the diagram.

    3. Without moving your head or the ruler open the left eye and close the right eye. Read the number that lines up with the centre of the pupil of the left eye. This number represents your Distance PD in millimetres. You have just used this technique to measure your distance PD.

    4. Repeat this whole process at least 3 times to try and get a consistent measurement in millimetres. Make sure your head and the ruler do not move after lining up the zero on the ruler until you take the reading.

What Is Pupil Distance (PD) ?

(PD is also called Pupillary Distance and Inter-Pupillary Distance )

buying prescription eyeglasses online you have probably seen the term PD or pupil distance so what is (PD)?>>>The distance between the center of the pupil in one eye and the center of the pupil of your other eye.PD varies from person to person but once you are an adult, your PD does not change. Therefore, as an adult, if you have had it measured, then it will still be the same, even if your spectacle prescription has changed. Once you know your PD, you do not need to measure it every time you buy prescription glasses.PD is measured either during the eye test or when prescription glasses are ordered so it is best to make sure your PD is included in your eyeglasses prescription.

    What do these numbers mean?

    Size:51-16-130 mm
    Total Width:25 mm
    Lens Height:130 mm

The size numbers next to the frames are measurements in mm (millimeters).

For the listed SIZE of the frame,

    • the first number is the width of the lenses;
    • the second is the distance between the lenses,
    • the third is the full length of the temple/arm (including the part that goes behind your ear)..

The LENS HEIGHT is the distance from the highest point on the top to the lowest point on the bottom of the lens.

The TOTAL WIDTH of the frame is the distance across from the far left to the far right of the frame when looking straight at it.

Tips to Help You Choose the Perfect Eyeglasses

Choosing the perfect eyeglasses is very important for a number of reasons. First of all, the frame must fit your face properly. Everyone's face is different in shape and size, so the eyeglasses have to cover the eyes properly. If not, a person's eyesight can be compromised. The lenses do not fit around the eyes in the best way they can. Second, the eyeglasses do not look right if their color and their shape are not correct, making them look odd on a person's face.

Another reason to have eyeglasses that are perfect is because glasses are not really so dreadful to wear nowadays. They have become smaller, but individuals do adapt to their small size in a short period of time. Glasses are seen as a way to make a person look intelligent and have actually become a fashion statement in many sectors.

How to choose the perfect eyeglasses

Choosing eyeglasses is not something to make a rash decision on. Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect eyeglasses:

    - Look at the features of your face - Glasses accentuate certain features, so you don't want to accentuate the wrong ones. If you have nice features that are not very "loud," then you can choose eyeglasses that will bring out those features. If you have features you want to make a little more subtle, then your glasses should only bring out those things that you want them to bring out.

    - Pay attention to your colors - Individuals have different hair color, eye color, and skin color. It is important that the glasses go with your coloring. If you have red hair and freckles, you may not want to invest in bright red glasses. Those with dark skin should go with a lighter pair of glasses. Those with lighter skin should go a bit darker. Think of it as a scale from lightest to darkest and then classify the colors of glasses in the same way while examining the glasses that you like.

    - Branded vs. unbranded - It is true that branded eyeglasses are of a better quality. As for what brand you buy is going to depend on how much money is in your wallet. Don't buy a pair of eyeglasses just because they are a brand. Make sure that you're buying a pair of glasses that looks good on your face.

    - Selecting the lenses - Selecting the lenses can actually be difficult. This is because there are many options when it comes to lenses. Those options include: the option to have thick lenses thinned out, anti-glare coatings, tinting, and so much more. The establishment you're buying from will review all of your options with you. However, only purchase those options that you feel you need because the lenses can become more expensive than the glasses if too many unnecessary options are chosen.

These are the most common and most important things to consider when choosing your eyeglasses. In terms of having lenses thinned out, this can be very important in your decision as to what frame to choose. This is because the thickness of a lens can severely compromise the appearance of the frame. If you have a high prescription that result in very thick lenses, this is an option you may want to consider in order to make your glasses look better on your face.

Sunglasses, on the other hand, have been seen more as a fashion accessory than an aid in sunlight since the nineteen thirties.
It is not an easy job to get the kind of designer glasses that you want at a price you can afford but there are some lower priced designer sunglasses that are just as attractive as those from the big name designer houses. If you want to know what sunglasses are both fashionable and useful for keeping the dust from your eyes and protecting your sight from the harmful UV rays of the sun? It is well worth taking a look in the fashion magazines or trawling the internet to find sunglasses that suit both your style and your pocket.
Before you spend a lot of money on your designer sunglasses it is worth doing some research. Nowadays you can get designer sunglasses that are made especially for sports like fishing, golf and skiing. These sunglasses have special lenses, depending on what you are doing, and cost more because of these special properties. Designer names to look for in sporting sunglasses are Ray ban and Nike.
Designers like Armani have a new collection of designer sunglasses every year, as do Dior and Prada. Because men, as well as women view designer sunglasses as a must have fashion accessory these fashion houses usually have designs for both. Gucci and Dior sunglasses have their own special signature usually on the arms of the sunglasses and this can make them difficult to replicate. In recent years there has been a trend back to the large sunglasses that were made so popular in the nineteen sixties by people like Jackie Kennedy, and these are made by most of the big fashion houses and come in a range of colors. Sunglasses have been a popular accessory for more than seventy years and it seems that their popularity is set to continue.

How to Find the Best Reading Glasses For Your Face Shape

When selecting reading glasses and sunreaders, it is important to take into consideration your face shape. You may love the funky design of a great sunreader, but will it be flattering on your face? Or would you look ridiculous and peculiar?

It would certainly be helpful to have an honest friend to bring along during your shopping trip. But that's not always effective, especially when you don't have a friend who has a tuned aesthetic eye. Or you might end up bringing someone who would just nod approvingly to each frame.

Luckily, there is another way to choose the best reading glasses for you, without involving a friend who does not want to hurt your feelings. This strategy is great when you are planning to surprise everyone with your new look. And the strategy simply involves the use of geometry, your basic knowledge of shapes.

If you can tell the difference between a triangle and a square, then you've already acquired the basic skills. If you can distinguish an oblong from an oval, then you're in good shape. And if you simply look at the mirror and honestly analyze the shape your face resembles, then you can buy the reading glasses best suited for you.

Flattering reading glasses for a triangular face

You friends may have teased you about the triangular singularity of your face. Your forehead is unusually narrow, while your chin and cheeks are distinctly wide. When people look at you, their eyes are drawn to the dominant lower half of your face.

The good news is that you have something in common with Julia Roberts and Eric Bana.

More good news is that you have a wide variety of choices when it comes to reading glasses! However, that does not mean that you can let someone else buy your reader glasses. In fact, the best reading glasses for a triangular face are low-temple styles, semi-rimless frames, aviator style reading glasses, and cat-eye frames. If you are not savvy to the names of such frames, all you need to remember is to choose reading glasses that will add width to the upper part of your face.

Stylish reading glasses that soften a square face

You may have noticed that people have second thoughts about approaching you, even though your closest friends swear that you have the most congenial personality. But the truth is right in front of that mirror. Your face has a square shape. It is a formidable and powerful face. Your jaw is pronounced and your forehead is wide.

For a man, a square face conveys undeniable strength, such as the face of Bruce Willis. For a woman, the square shape has led to many agonizing minutes of using makeup to soften the overall countenance. But some women, like Jamie Lee Curtis, appear comfortable with their square faces. The secret is around the eyes. With the right reading glasses or sunreaders, a woman does need to not worry much about makeup. The reader glasses that will soften the square face are those with round frames. For a really chic look, opt for designer reading glasses whose left and right edges flow past the shape of the face.

Define circular faces with chic reading glasses

You've been called baby-face so many times you're beginning to think it is your official nickname. When people see your round face, they can't help but think of babies, who are, after all, born with cute round faces.

However, you do not need to lose sleep over a face shape reminiscent of your childhood. Drew Barrymore and Kate Winslet are in the same boat. You should enjoy that youthful shape, but you also needed something else to make people realize that you are an adult.

To add sophistication to your appearance, you will need reading glasses with angular frames, with the horizontal widths significantly longer than the vertical length. To add glitz, you can opt for rhinestones and colored temples. Your best reading glasses should also have a distinct bridge between the eyes.

Keeping the proportions of an oval face with reading glasses

An oval face is considered the most balanced, and sometimes, the most coveted, especially when represented by the beautiful faces of Sharon Stone, Tyra Banks, and Cindy Crawford. An oval face's cheekbones are high, while the chin is slightly narrower than the forehead, and the jaws are soft.

For the oval face, the best reading glasses show off the simplicity of such balance. The size of the frames should be wider than the cheeks. And the reading glasses should be simple with minimum motifs or designs. You might be disappointed with the idea that designer reading glasses are not recommended for you, but there is really nothing needed to fix for your perfectly shaped face.

Reading glasses balance an oblong face

The oblong shape has been the culprit for creating the impression of sadness on a face. The cheek line is precisely defined, making it longer and narrower. The long face is conventionally associated with the sad face. But if you knew the alluring Gwyneth Paltrow has an oblong face, then there is nothing to be sad about.

To ensure that the right reading glasses complement such a face, you need to stick to three basic types. These are the low-triangle frames, the round frames, and the semi-rimless frames. These types of reader glasses add width to the face.

Stylish reading glasses that add sparkle to diamond faces

You may have found your reflection a little bit peculiar, especially when you and your friends are standing side by side in front of the mirror. The reason for the difference is the diamond shape of your face. Among your friends and family, you are the only one with such a face shape.

However, don't think of yourself as odd because Sophia Loren and Katherine Hepburn also have the same face shape. Think of yourself as rare. And think of yourself lucky because you look great in many types of reading glasses, including rimless frames, oval frames, and cat-eye frames. Designer reading glasses will look great on you, especially when the design is dominant along the brow lines.
